OUR FATHER

Directly after Jesus’ baptism by John and the Father’s affirmation that “You are my beloved Son”, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the desert and there He is tempted to doubt the very message He has just received – Satan’s best ploy – which put an IF before the affirmation.

We ourselves can have “flashes of light” when in some way we really experience God’s Presence, even if usually these glimpses vanish almost as soon as we see them!  We walk by faith, not by sight.  Then, when beset by doubts and maybe not able to see the road ahead, an old poem has this sound advice; “put your hand in the Hand of God.  That will be better than a light and safer than a known way”.

It takes trust on our part to allow another to take us by the hand and lead us, we know not where.  We will only do it with someone we know and trust.  Prayer – talking and listening to Jesus – is the best way to know Him and if at times we are stuck for words, there is always the prayer that, when asked, Jesus taught his disciples for their sake and for ours too, “Our Father…”

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity takes place from 18-25 on the theme ‘Justice and justice only you shall pursue’.

Resources for this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity were produced by Christians from Indonesia, the largest country in South East Asia, made up of more than 17,000 islands, 1,340 different ethnic groups and over 740 local languages, united by one national language Bahasa Indonesia. With some 86% of its 260 million people estimated to be Muslim, it has the largest Islamic population of any country. About 10% of Indonesians are Christian. Indonesians have lived by the principle of gotong royong which is to live in ‘solidarity and by collaboration’, regarding all Indonesians as brothers and sisters.

The Christians of Indonesia found that the words of Deuteronomy, ‘Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue…'(see Deut. 16:18-20) spoke powerfully to their situation.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

The people were searching and John pointed them in the direction of Jesus.  On your life’s journey who have been the John the Baptist people for you, people who have pointed you in the right direction?

The Baptism of Jesus was a very special moment for him that affirmed him in his identity as Son of God and in his mission. Recall the experiences that affirmed you – either in your sense of who you are, or in relation to the direction you were taking in life.

The Baptism of Jesus marks a transition point in his life, and the start of his public ministry.  Recall the transition points in your own life.  Where did you see the grace of God at work in those times?

This experience of Jesus occurred when he was at prayer.  What part has prayer played in opening you to being aware of God in your life?  What part has prayer played in helping you through a transition point in your life?

John Byrne osa
