POWER AND SERVICE

Things haven’t turned out exactly as Jesus intended. Often, if one is ambitious enough, desiring power and authority, they are likely to rise to lofty positions, even in the Church. James and John were among such people in Jesus’ day. Yet they went on to serve God’s people, even though they had been promised the paying of a steep price for serving.

Jesus’ idea of authority is the one who is servent of all – the only primacy in God’s Community is a primacy of service. Jesus fled when people wanted Him as their King, so He is wary of people who need to “climb” – to arrange their own coronations. Jesus does Himself what He asks others to do: to serve and not be served; to give love freely and not expect “worship”; to reach out to those in need, not waiting for approval. Christian discipleship is a “service industry” where there should be no unemployment. There is work for everyone!

As we become aware of how gifted God’s people are, we see many new ministries coming to the fore in the Church. When all Christians feel that their service is just not called for but actually necessary – then we shall become a serving people.

Today’s Gospel is most appropiate for the day that’s in it – Mission Sunday. It is the day we acknowledge the service of women and men who leave home and country for the spread of the Kingdom of God.

NIGHT OF LIGHT – CELEBRATION OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween means 'the evening of the Saints' and while it has been re designated by culture as a night of goblins and gowls, the whole idea of Halloween is the preparation for the great feast of All Saints Day, November 1st .

To mark this, there is a party for kids in the Parish Centre, 6.30-8pm on October 31st. Fun, food and games, with a little dash of prayer! Children are invited to come along dressed as....their favourite saint!

LIST OF THE DEAD

November is the month when we pray especially for the dead. November 1st is the Feast of all the Saints and November 2nd is the Commemoration of the faithful  departed.

Both feast days remind us that our life on earth will come to its end, and the hope and promise of eternal life with God is there for us all.

An important tradition in Ireland is writing down the names of our departed friends and relations on the Altar List of the Dead. This list is compiled every November and Mass is offered for those on it at all Masses on Friday November 2nd, also 7.45am Monday 6th, Wednesday 7th, Thursday 8th and every First Friday for the coming 12 months.

Take time with your family to write this list. Think of family, friends and neighbours over the years. Particularly remember those who have no one to pray for them.

Dead lists are available in the Church. Please fill up one, if you would like to do so and drop into the Sacristy or the Parish Centre over the coming weeks.

NOVEMBER MONTH OF REMEMBERING

This year we will have a 'Wall of Comfort' in the church where you will have a chance to write names of loved ones gone before us as a reminder of our commitment to pray for them.

There will also be Mass of the bereaved on Saturday November 3rd at 10.00am.

On Tuesday November 13th at 7.30pm Mass is offered for families who have lost children. All families will receive a special candle to bring home.

MARKING THE END OF WORLD WAR I- MASS FOR THE FALLEN

Sunday November 11th marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. 35,000 Irish died in the conflict, many from our own parish and Co. Offaly. 11.30am Mass will be offered for the repose of their souls on day, and for peace.

A new book published by the Offaly Historical Society with the names of fallen from the county will be brought up at the offertory and a floral wreath.

An ecumenical service takes place in St. Catherine's, Hophill, on Sunday Nov 11 at 7pm, to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War 1. At the service flowers from Catholic, Church of Ireland, Methodist and Presbyterian communities will be presented. These will be later placed at the War Memorial in O'Connor Sq. Preacher; Rev Clodagh Yambasu, Tullamore Methodist.
