THE GIFT OF WISDOM

The readings today are rich in reflective thought. In the book of wisdom, Solomon cannot emphasise enough the gift of wisdom and values it above gold, silver and even his own health.

In the gospel we get a beautiful insight into the subtely and sensitivity of Jesus in His communication with people. He gives a masterclass displaying a great depth of wisdom and understanding in imparting a message. Despite our own best efforts we can also be like the “rich young man” and fail to see the obvious. The person at the centre of the gospel was without doubt a very good well intentioned person who wanted the ultimate gift of inheriting “eternal life”. Jesus engaged with him in a loving, caring and sensitive manner. However Jesus’ response to his question was not what he expected nor indeed wanted to hear. It was a call to “poverty of spirit” a mindset where he was in a sense detached from his wealth. The call of Jesus to the man at that moment was too much for him.

As St. Paul says the words of Jesus were alive and active “sharper than any two-edged sword”. The invitation to the wealthy man who courageously asked his question also confronts us in our daily lives. It is as relevant today as it was back then. Jesus answer remains the same; attachment can diminish our freedom to follow the call of Jesus.

MUSINGS

‘Of the essence of motherhood is the fact that it concerns the person. Motherhood always establishes a unique and unrepeatable relationship between two people: between mother and child and between child and mother. Even when the same woman is the mother of many children, her personal relationship with each one of them is the very essence of motherhood.

For each child is generated in a unique and unrepeatable way, and this is true both for the mother and for the child. Each child is surrounded in the same way by that maternal love on which are based the child’s development and coming to maturity as a human being […] Mary’s motherhood which becomes man’s inheritance is a gift: a gift which Christ himself makes personally to evry individual’.

Saint John Paul II, Intercom 2018

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

… Don’t make the mistake of letting yesterday use up too much of today …

NEXT SUNDAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY -

SUNDAY OCTOBER 14TH

Next Sunday, 21st October, Pope Francis is asking you and every Catholic worldwide to come together in celebration of World Mission Sunday. On this very special day, every Church, in every parish across our globe will give what they can, no matter how little, towards the World Mission Sunday collection.

Your contribution will be used to help spread faith, hope and love by supporting overseas missionaries, many of whom work in some of the worlds most impoverished and remote communities.

There will be an exit collection next Sunday to support the missions. Further information can be found at www.wmi.ie

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Mark 10:17-30

We often get satisfaction from the things we own, clothes, cars, homes, gadgets or money. There would be something unnatural if we did not. But what happens to us when possesions begin to ‘own’ us, when they take a hold of us, when we become obsessed with them? Jesus seeks followers who have the freedom to let go of possessions in order to be a servant of others. In whom have you seen this freedom? When have you experienced it yourself?

Growth implies change. That change sometimes means letting go of something we have at this moment: job, status, home, secutiry, or something else we value. There can be an apparent loss in letting go. Yet have you ever found that you actually gained by having the freedom to let go of something to which you had previously clung?

The disciples thought that Jesus was making impossible demands of people following him. He acknowledged that discipleship was impossible to us on our own efforts alone. How have you experienced the benefits of the help of others and of God when you were faced with difficulties in life?

John Byrne, osa, Intercom 2018
