AT TIMES GOD SEEMS TO ASK TOO MUCH For the past number of weeks John in his gospel has challenged and summoned us to strengthen our belief in the body and blood of Jesus in the Eucharist. Jesus was in no way concerned about the number of His followers and was not prepared to compromise on His message to keep them. Many had left Him and His response was to confront His apostles and pose the question “Do you also wish to go away?” It was decision time and after a few moments of silence Peter answered “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the message of eternal life.” Today we are asked the very same question. Whom do we wish to serve? Are we willing to live the teachings of Jesus or not? Do we follow Jesus in a half-hearted part-time manner, casually floating along in our faith without ever really being as decisive as Peter? Do we follow Jesus with the assertiveness of Peter believing that He has the message of eternal life? The teaching and message of Jesus will constantly challenge us so let us ask the Lord to help us daily and to remember that He has given Himself to us in the Eucharist – the greatest gift of all. KILBRIDE CEMETERY The annual mass and blessing of the graves will take place in Kilbride Cemetery on Sunday 2nd September at 10.00am. Fr. Rory O’ Brien will celebrate mass. All are welcome. A gate collection will take place to help with the cutting of grass and upkeep of the graveyard. POPE’S VISIT As people from across the country and across the world gather in Dubin today with Pope Francis, we offer a prayer for the Holy Father and for all families: “Bless us all with the joy of love. Make us patient and kind, gentle and generous, welcoming to those in need. Protect all families with your loving care. Amen.” On Monday Pope Francis published a letter to all the Catholics of the world concerning the sexual abuse of children by priests and religious. We will have a chance to examine the letter in details in the coming weeks. He is clear in message. “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it” (1 Cor 12:26). These words of Saint Paul forcefully echo in my heart as I acknowledge once more the suffering endured by many minors due to sexual abuse, the abuse of power and the abuse of conscience perpetrated by a significant number of clerics and consecrated persons. Crimes that inflict deep wounds of pain and powerlessness, primarily among the victims, but also in their family members and in the larger community of believers and nonbelievers alike. Looking back to the past, no effort to beg pardon and to seek to repair the harm done will ever be sufficient. Looking ahead to the future, no effort must be spared to create a culture able to prevent such situations from happening, but also to prevent the possibility of their being covered up and perpetuated. The pain of the victims and their families is also our pain, and so it is urgent that we once more reaffirm our commitment to ensure the protection of minors and of vulnerable adults." ALPHA IRELAND You are invited to the all new and updated Alpha Programme that returns to Tullamore, commencing 13th September at 7.30pm in the Parish Centre.
