THE BREAD OF LIFE

In today’s reading we have two stories on the theme of bread. The first concerns Elisha feeding a hundred men with twenty barley loaves and still having some left over. The second story is that of Jesus feeding as many as five thousand with five barley loaves and two fish. Again the pieces left over were picked up, “so that nothing gets wasted”. We notice that in the miracle of feeding the multitude Jesus used the same gestures as for the Eucharist – “Jesus took the loaves gave thanks, and gave them out to all”.

The Gospel account tells us of Jesus’ concern for the people who have been following him. Not only does he nurture their spiritual needs with his words and teachings, but his love extends also to their physical needs. The miraculous act of feeding the five thousand shows his concern, compassion, generosity and indeed, saving power.

Jesus Himself taught us to pray for “our daily bread” as the central symbol of our existence. The nourishing bread is of enduring significant to our faith. In the Eucharist, we remember that Jesus offered himself completely for the salvation of all. He is the bread of Life that satisfies the deepest hungers of the human heart.

In the Eucharist, we received Jesus Himself, the Bread of Life, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity. Do you see the sign of the bread in the Eucharist for what it really is?

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

John 6:1-15

At the heart of this story we are told that Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks and distributed them. In our day this reminds us of the Eucharist, the bread of life, with which Jesus feeds us. Can you recall an experience of the Eucharist that was especially significant for you? What was it that made it different? How did it influence your understanding of the Eucharist?

Take, give thanks, distribute. The actions of Jesus also suggest an attitude to time, gifts and living. We take what we are given, give thanks, and use what we have. Have you found that having a grateful heart for what you have been given has made it easier for you to share with others?

From what seemed meagre and inadequate resources many were fed. When have you found that when your gratefully use what little resources you have the results are beyond your expectations?

Jesus chose to involve those around him in feeding the people. Have there been times when you have experienced benefits from calling on those around you to use their gifts to help with a task?

MUSINGS

‘Hope is the leaven that, in those first years of engagement and marriage, makes it possible to look beyond arguments, conflicts and problems and to see things in a broader perspective. It harnesses our uncertainties and concerns so that growth can take place.

Hope also bids us to live fully in the present, giving our all to the life of the family, for the best way to prepare a solid future and to live well in the present’

Pope Francis, Amoris Laetitia, 219
