THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL

Pope Francis is our model, faith is what we do or what Christians do. He is our contact, or our role model in pursuit of justice and peace.

Pope Francis has encouraged us to set out anew on this journey of faith because faith is what we Christians do. Here we have a creative response to poverty and social exclusion. Caring for the poor was at the heart of the Gospel.

In the joy of the Gospel, Francis strongly encouraged Christians to take the Gospel out of the churches and into the streets.

Pope Francis has shown by example. He has travelled to countries in crisis. He continues to make the cause of the poor a priority, providing accomodation, food and medical services to the poor of Rome. And remember, Faith is what we do, not who we are.

SAINT OLIVER PLUNKETT

Today we celebrate the feast of Saint Oliver Plunkett. He was born 1st November 1625 and died on 1st July 1681. He was born at Loughcrew, in the parish of Oldcastle, Co Meath.

As Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, he maintained his duties in Ireland in the face of persecution and was eventually arrested and tried for treason in London. He was hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn on 1 July 1681, and became the last Roman Catholic martyr to die in England.

Oliver Plunkett was beatified in 1920 and canonised in 1975, the first new Irish saint for almost seven hundred years.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Mark 5:21-43

Like this woman, have you had the experience of a cure, an improvement, a success, after a long period of nothing happening? What was that like for you? What made the difference? On that occasion was there anythiong different in you, in others, in the circumstances-something that paved the way for the change or improvement?

‘Who touched me?’ Jesus asked. It seemes a strange request with crowds milling around. Many people brushed against him but the woman made contact in a different way. The same can happen in our relationships. We brush against many people but make real contact with only a few. Who are the people you have touched, and who has touched you? What difference has this made to you and them?

Jesus said to the woman, ‘Your faith has made you well’. What difference does it make to you that you have faith? In what ways does your faith make you well?

When Jairus asked Jesus to come and cure his daughter, some thought there was no point. Sometimes a situation can look llike a lost cause. Has it ever happened to you that subsequent events showed there was hope where you thought there was none?
