In today’s Gospel, we are given another account of Jesus becoming present to the apostles after his death and resurrection. In spite of their earlier recent experiences – the empty tomb with the folded clothes, the account of the two disciples who met Jesus on the way to Emmaus and who recognised him in the breaking of bread – they still do not know him. They do not recognise him and they do not understand that he id risen from the dead. Scriptual faith in the resurrection still awaits them.

Jesus has to allow himself to be touched by them, to eat before their eyes, in order to convince them that it is indeed himself, the crucified One – the One they knew had died – that is now restored to life, body and soul, flesh and bones – not a ghost. With this concrete evidence of the Risen Christ, they come to understand and believe.

Jesus explains the scriptures to them and they then understand their minds are opened to scriptual faith in the resurrection. They understand that it is through the suffering death and resurrection of Jesus that our sins are forgiven. That is what we express when we recite with meaning the words of the Apostles’ Creed that end with our expression of our belief in the forgiveness on sins, the ressurection of the body, and life everlasting.

VOCATIONS SUNDAY: Next Sunday is a day of prayer for vocations. A special collection will be taken up at all Masses for Vocations in the Diocese.

LUKE 24:35-48

When we are not expecting it to happen, even a good event can startle us. So it was with the disciples when Jesus appeared to them. He sought to calm them and helped them to see the good news behind what initially alarmed them. Who has been a Jesus person for you by helping you to find meaning and good news in life?

Jesus helped the disciples to find new hope, but he did not give them easy answers. He asked them to see the facts before their eyes. He wanted them to learn from the lived experience they were having. As a parent, teacher, friend or guide, have you been a Jesus person to another, helping him/her to find hope and purpose in life by learning from his/her experiences? Who has done this for you?

Jesus opened their minds to ‘understand the scriptures’, and the effect was transformative. Perhaps there have been times when a new and deeper understanding of scripture has had a transformative impact on you. Recall the experience and give thanks for those who opened the scriptures for you.

The resurrection experience empowered the disciples to be witnesses. Unexpected possibilities for the future surfaced when it seemed that hope had gone. When have new possibilities opened for you after a ‘resurrection’ experience: recovery of health when it did not seem possible, new opportunities after failure or disappointment, inner healing after a deep hurt?
