THE TRANSFIGURATION

The second Sunday of Lent is always devoted to the mystery of the Transfiguration. The account of this event in today’s Gospel is familiar to us. Jesus takes Peter, James  and John up a high mountain where they could be alone by themselves. While there, Moses and Elijah, who symbolise the Law and the Prophets, are seen to be in conversation with Jesus. The disciples witness this and another wonderful, but more frightening sight. Jesus is transfigured before them. That is, Jesus underwent a dramtic change in appearance. His personal apperance was changed into a glorified form, and his clothing became “dazzling white”. The disciples see all of this. The purpose of the transfiguration of Christ into a glorified form was to allow his three disciples a greater insight and understanding of who he was.

We know from Peter’s reaction and offer to make three tents that they did not then quite grasp the significance of the event. They saw Jesus as having something like the status of Moses and Elijah. They had not quite realised the deity of Christ, although they were edging towards this understanding.

Then a voice came from the cloud, “This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to Him”. Only Jesus remained. Moses and Elijah were gone. The Law and the Prophets had given way to Jesus. The message could not have been more direct and clear. We must now listen to Jesus.

What does it mean to listen to Jesus? Are you listening?

PARISH FINANCE REPORT

The finance report for 2017 is available this weekend in the churches and we encourage you to take a copy home.

Our parish debt is now €497,898. We have made solid progress in reducing our debt during the year and we have also been able to support and develop our busy parish. This is due to the generosity and of our parishioners.

Your weekly contributions to the plate and envelope collections and your support of our fundraising events are making a difference. We thank you for your generosity and appeal to you to continue your support. We can be proud of our parish.  Thank you.

The Parish Finance Committee.

COMMUNION FOR THE SICK AND HOUSEBOUND

We commend the many people who take Holy Communion to the Sick and Housebound in our Parish each Sunday.

Recently we have prepared a card, which contains the prayers to be used when taking Communion to the Sick and Housebound. We invite all who carry out this Ministry to collect a copy of the Card in the Sacristy after Mass today. We also ask all who may have carried out this ministry in the past to ensure that any Pyx which they still possess be returned to the Sacristy.  Any person wishing to commence this Ministry to a member of her/his family is invited to collect a Pyx in the Sacristy after Mass on Sunday.

We remind all involved in the Ministry that Sick persons are not obliged to observe the Eucharistic Fast of an hour before receiving Holy Communion.  We ask all who are taking Communion to the Sick to please receive the Host from one of the priests in the Church.  Finally a reminder that it is not permitted to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in the home of the Minister or the Sick person overnight.

Again a word of thanks and commendation to all the generous people who undertake this Ministry in our Parish

WHEN DOES A BABY’S HEART START TO BEAT?

The first few weeks are the most rapid time of development of a new human life. The baby’s beating heart has been recorded as early as 21 days after conception - this is sometimes before mum discovers she’s pregnant.

A new weekly newsletter called ‘ChooseLife2018’ is now available and we are eager to promote it as much as possible. The weekly newsletter is online at www.chooselife2018.ie. If you can’t find it online, please let us know and we will get you a copy of it.

In the coming weeks, we will use our parish newsletter to share with you some information to help us value the beauty of every unborn child in the womb. We do not believe that the unborn child should be left with no rights in our Constitution. We can stand for a better vision of life.
