 THE VOICE OF JOHN

John’s is a strident voice, contrasting at times with what appears to be the gentle Jesus of Christmas.  John presents a tough message, and demands conversion and change. Yet he too was the one who would preach the forgiveness of sins and would ‘guide the people in the way of peace’.

The message of Jesus is comfort and challenge; both are part of our waiting in Advent. The birth of the Christ-child each year comforts us, and presents the warmth and ease of the love of God. We know also that the life of this child will challenge us to take up our cross, and to believe that in every death there is ressurection and in every tough experience of life can be found the blessing of God.

Guide us Lord in the way of peace,

Guide us in the ways of forgiveness and tolerance

For then you guide us in the way of God.

This a beautiful time of prayer and reflection in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, as we join with the whole church throughout the world in praise to God.

HOSPITAL CHAPEL TABERNACLE AND MONSTRANCE

Sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the restoration of the Hospital Chapel tabernacle and monstrance.

They have been restored to their former beauty and were rededicated and blessed at Mass last Sunday.

The remainder of the offerings will be used for some other minor works in the Chapel.

CHRISTMAS CAROL CONCERT- THANK YOU

The Christmas Carol Concert which took place last Sunday was a very special event which brought together many sections of our community for an evening of music and reflection. The success of the evening was due to the co-operation and hard work and commitment of so many people.

Our sincere appreciation to the Choirs, parents, teachers and school staff, choir directors and musicians,  the parish fundraising committee, the Knights of St. Columbanus, the Hospitality group, Parish staff, those who sold tickets and those who bought tickets and to all who made this evening possible. This was an evening which builds community, opens imaginations and creates rich memories.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Mark 1:1-8

John the Baptist is presented as a messenger to prepare the away for Jesus. Who have been messengers to you, preparing the way for the Lord by alerting you to ways in which you could improve your life? To whom have you been such a messenger?

John calls the people to repentance (i.e. a change of heart), as a way to a new life. Can you recall times when you had a change of heart and the change led to new life for you?

John baptised people with water as a gesture to mark their change of heart. Sometimes we perform an action to symbolize our change of heart – write a letter, throw away our last cigarettes, etc. Can you remember a symbolic gesture with which you marked a change of heart?

(John Byrne, OSA, Intercom, 2017)
