CONVERSION OF HEART

We are all called to conversion. The call is from God, and he is patiently waiting for us to change our ways.

We have all had occasions when we were let down by someone; when we or our Christian values were rejected; when we were hurt by people we had helped.

How often have we complained: “after all I have done for them”, instead of using these experiences to turn our lives around and open ourselves to God’s compassion and interior conversion. St. Paul says: “...fill your minds with everything that is noble; everything that is good and pure; everything that we love and honour”.

The owner of the vineyard made three efforts to get the tenant farmers to change their ways. God is patient and wise and will hold us accountable. Let us pray to God for conversion of heart and “...he will stand guard over our hearts and minds”, (Phil 4:6).

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL

Matthew 21:33-43

The target audience of this allegorical parable are the Jewish chief priest and elders portrayed here as rejecting Jesus and his teaching, and as a consequence losing out on what God was offering them. It is a story of opportunity for life presented and rejected, and they lose out in the process. How important have you found it to recognise and accept opportunities for growth, development and new life when these were presented to you?

The parable is also a cautionary tale about the destructive effects of greed-doing violence to the rights of others and eventually destroying the greedy themselves. What attitude towards possessions has helped you to be at peace in yourself and at peace with others?

The vineyard of the Lord is an image for God’s people. As we look at the vineyard we have been given, we can ask ourselves ‘are we good tenants?’ Recall times when you have been a good tenant and reached out caringly for those around you.

‘It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone. This was the Lord’s doing and it was wonderful to see’. Sometimes a person not highly regarded plays a key role in a project, and it is wonderful to see. Can you recall examples of this?

PARISH MISSION 9th- 13th

CELEBRATION OF THE CENTENARY OF FATIMA

Friday 13th marks the 100th anniversary of the final apparition of Our Lady in Fatima. On that day Our Lady told the children who she was – Our Lady of the Rosary. She asked for devotion to her Immaculate Heart and called on the whole world to come back to God. She also asked us to pray the Rosary for peace.  Thousands witnessed the ‘miracle of the sun,’ a phenomenon that still can’t be explained and was witnessed by believer and unbeliever alike.

Each evening will begin with the Rosary at 7.15, followed by Mass, devotions and Benediction.

Monday  9th:  Fr. Barry Condron – Fr Barry is a native of Rahan parish and is parish prIest of Castletown Geoghegan/Tyrrellspass. Testimony will be given by some young people from our parish, who will also organise the evening’s liturgy.

Tuesday 10th:  Fr. David Vard, Portlaoise. Fr David was ordained in the last few months and is the youngest priest in Ireland.

Wednesday 11th:  Fr. Philip Mulryne OP. A member of the Dominican Order, Fr Philip played professional football with Manchester United, Norwich and was capped for Northern Ireland before following the path to priesthood.

Thursday 12th:  Fr. John Stapleton  Parish priest of neighbouring Killeigh, Fr John will reflect on the Holy family – a very important theme in the run up the World Meeting of Families next August, and, please God, the visit of Pope Francis.

Friday – 13th anniversary of the last apparition.

Fr. John Nally. Parish Priest of Ballynacargy, Co. Westmeath, Fr John was curate here for many years and had has lead numerous pilgrimages to Fatima.
