A SECOND CHANCE

In this parable of the two sons, Jesus holds up the example of the public sinners in his time being converted, while the establishment figures refuse to listen to his message.

We all have the freedom to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to God and to change the direction of our lives.  We are all called to work in the vineyard.  Some of us accept, while others refuse.

Like the first son, it is not what we say but what we do.  He said ‘no’ initially but later changed his mind and did what the father asked of him.  He is the one that heard the message.

Sometimes we can convince ourselves that we are doing the Lord’s work when our pride blinds us to the truth.  The repentent sinner will rarely suffer from this illusion but work all the harder because he appreciates that he has been given a second chance.  As the wise old saying says, “actions speak louder than words”.

PARISH MISSION 9th-13th

CELEBRATION OF THE CENTENARY OF FATIMA

Friday 13th marks the 100th anniversary of the final apparition of Our Lady in Fatima. On that day Our Lady told the children who she was – Our Lady of the Rosary. She asked for devotion to her Immaculate Heart and called on the whole world to come back to God. She also asked us to pray the Rosary for peace. Thousands witnessed the ‘miracle of the sun,’ a phenomenon that still can’t be explained and was witnessed by believer and unbeliever alike.

Each evening will begin with the Rosary at 7.15, followed by Mass, devotions and Benediction.

Monday 9th: Fr. Barry Condron – Fr Barry is a native ofRahan parish and is parish priest of Castletown Geoghegan/Tyrrellspass. Testimony will be given by some young people from our parish, who will also organise the evening’s liturgy.

Tuesday 10th:  Fr. David Vard Portlaoise - Fr David was ordained in the last few months and is the youngest priest in Ireland

Wednesday 11th:  Fr. Philip Mulryne OP. - A member of the Dominican Order - Fr Philip played professional football with Manchester United and Norwich and was capped for Northern Ireland before following the path to priesthood.

Thursday 12th:  Fr. John Stapleton - Parish priest of neighbouring Killeigh - will reflect on the Holy family, a very important theme in the run up the World Meeting of Families next August, and, please God, the visit of Pope Francis.

Friday 13th- anniversary of the last apparition:  Fr. JohnNally, Parish Priest of Ballynacargy, Co. Westmeath.Fr John was curate here for many years and had has led numerous pilgrimages to Fatima.

There will be a special Mass Card for the Centenary Celebration of Fatima. The intentions will be included in the evening Mass 9-13 October. The cards will be available in the Parish Centre.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

Matthew 21:28-32

It is possible to be a dutiful and observant Christian, and yet feel there is something missing. It makes such a difference when your heart is in what you are doing – so much better than just going through the motions. Where do you experience that most in your life?....
