A WONDERFUL GENEROSITY The parable in today’s Gospel is one that bothers many of us – it doesn’t seem fair that those working a few hours should get the same wage as those who were there from dawn. We think of it as unjust but the lesson here is not justice – it’s about a generosity we can’t really understand. We can all be jealous or envious at times, depending on our circumstances. The trick is to appreciate all that we have been given in life and to not allow feelings of “poor me/us” to control us. It is this attitude of gratitude that Jesus tries to instill in the full day workers (and in us). Which of us wouldn’t be delighted to receive a full day’s pay for a few hours work? What keeps us from realising that our lives are actually a series of such gifts? This parable, like so many others, challenges us to see the reign of God in a different way from the way we see our everyday world. We are invited, through this story, to recognise and acknowledge God’s goodness to us and to accept that God is equally generous with all our brothers and sisters. Do I let envy fill my mind and my heart? Or do I know and appreciate my own unique contributions to the Kingdom of God? PARISH MISSION 9th-13th OCTOBER CELEBRATION OF THE CENTENARY OF FATIMA October 13th marks the 100th anniversary of the final apparition of Our Lady in Fatima. On that day Our Lady told the children who she was – Our Lady of the Rosary. She asked for devotion to her Immaculate Heart and called on the whole world to come back to God. She also asked us to pray the Rosary for peace. Thousands witnessed the ‘miracle of the sun,’ a phenomenon that still can’t be explained and was witnessed by believer and unbeliever alike. Each evening will begin with the Rosary at 7.15, followed by Mass, devotions and Benediction. Monday – 9th October Fr. Barry Condron – Fr Barry is a native of Rahan parish and is parish preist of Castletown Geoghegan - Tyrrellspass. Testimony will be given by some young people from our parish, who will also organise the evenings liturgy. Tuesday – 10th October Fr. David Vard – Portlaoise. Fr David was ordained in the last few months and is the youngest priest in Ireland Wednesday – 11th October Fr. Philip Mulryne OP.
