FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES

The content of today’s readings concerns forgiveness. Peter’s question to Jesus is very direct. He asks: “Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? Jesus answers in a clear statement: “Seventy-seven times”. In other words, there is no end to how often we must forgive our brothers. A number cannot be put on it.

Everything we have comes from God - life itself, our freedom, our families, our individual talents - these are all gifts from God. However, like the servant in the Gospel story, we can often forget the gifts God has freely given us. We can forget the love He has shown us and the mercy He pours out to us in spite of our neglect of Him. Eaten bread is soon forgotten. We can turn God’s creation upside-down in our ingratitude and neglect. We cannot injure God, but we can injure our neighbour, and he can hurt us.

Because God is good, He wants us to forgive others. He wants us to be consumed by the fire of love, not the fire of hate. We must forgive our neighbour from the depths of our heart, and all the time, for real and imagined hurts. As we say, in the prayer He gave us: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us”.

How are you doing in this matter?

CONFIRMATION

The launch of the Confirmation programme will take place at 6.30 vigil mass, Saturday 23rd September and 1.00pm Mass, Sunday 24th September.

Seats will be reserved for the students and their families at the front of the church.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

...Prayer may not change things all things for you, but it sure changes you for all things. Prayer is the stop that keeps you going...

(John Mason)

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN

The Parish of Tullamore/Durrow is committed to ensuring that the best practices in safeguarding children standards are being implemented so that we can ensure the safety and well being of our children, young people and the adults who work with them.

Over the next few weeks our local safeguarding representatives will be asking parents, once again to complete the 2017/2018 year consent forms for their children involved in church activities.

If you need advice about consent forms or other policy issues, please feel free to contact safeguarding representatives on 0579326604.

SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPELS

MATTHEW 18:21-35

Jesus surprised Peter by telling him he needed to forgive seventy-seven times. Perhaps you have known the truth of this when something reminds you of a past hurt and you find you in need in your heart to forgive again the person who hurt you. What was this like for you? How has a capacity to have a forgiving heart helped you?

Sometimes we need to forgive ourselves for things we regret about past behaviour. What happens to you when you cannot do this? How has your ability to forgive yourself for past mistakes influenced your attitude towards yourself now?

Are there people whose ability to forgive has inspired you? Recall them and the forgiveness they showed and give thanks for their example.

(John Byrne, OSA, Intercom)
