In the Gospel today we are shown that we have a responsibility toward our community. We have to remember that no one is an island. We are all brothers/sisters in Christ. Our lives can be short, so we should take seriously the duty of doing good while we can by helping those who are in real need.

Love is best remembered in all the little acts of kindness. They don’t have to be the big gestures. Normally silence is golden, but there are occasions when failure to speak out is to condone an evil deed.

We have to learn to help and heal each other and avoid prying, jealousy or informing on each other. A little honest talking can often clear the air. It is worth remembering that we all have faults.

Take seriously the idea of doing good while we can – Love our neighbour is a good place to start. Remember that love is best remembered in the little acts of kindness which can mean so much to a person’s life.

“Love one another, as I have loved you”

Our annual Mass to celebrate the Fruits of the Earth takes place on Sunday 17th and will be televised live by RTE at 11.00am.  This means that there will be no normal 10.00am and 11.30am Masses and it is hoped that all who normally attend these times will come to this 11.00am.   Personnel from the National Ploughing Assoc will also be in attendance in preparation for the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan.

We ask all Ministers of Holy Communion who normally officiate at 10am or 11.30 Masses to please attend.  We ask you to leave your name in the Sacristy after Mass today.  Mass Servers who normally serve at 10am or 11.30am are also invited to serve.  We remind their parents/guardians that in line with Child Protection guidelines a consent form allowing them to participate in a televised event must signed in advance. These forms will be sent out during the week.

A full rehearsal of the Mass will take place in the Church on Saturday 16th at 3pm. All servers, Ministers of Communion and Readers must attend this rehearsal.

We look forward to a full attendance at the Mass, and hope that our Mass will be an occasion of Prayer and Joy for the viewers.

“Take a minute, change a life"

Every year, more than 800,000 people die by suicide and up to 25 times as many make a suicide attempt. Behind these statistics are the individual stories of those who have, for many different reasons, questioned the value of their own lives.

Each one of these individuals is part of a community. Some may be well linked in to this community, and have a network of family, friends and work colleagues or school mates. Others may be less well connected, and some may be quite isolated. Regardless of the circumstances, communities have an important role to play in supporting those who are vulnerable.

This sentiment is reflected in the theme of the 2017 World Suicide Prevention Day: ‘Take a minute, change a life.’ As members of communities, it is our responsibility to look out for those who may be struggling, check in with them, and encourage them to tell their story in their own way and at their own pace. Offering a gentle word of support and listening in a non-judgemental way can make all the difference.  Life is precious and sometimes precarious. Taking a minute to reach out to someone – a complete stranger or close family member or friend – can change the course of their life.

On the eve of the 1st Friday of every month, there is a Holy Hour for the prevention of Suicide in the Day Chapel from 6.30-7.30pm.  All are most welcome.
