What Do I Believe?

When we all say the acclamation, "Lord Jesus, come in glory", what do we mean?

In the Gospel Jesus' followers ask Him, when this "Day of the Lord" will come, and what signs should herald its coming.  Jesus says He doesn't know when it is coming - only the Father does.  But of three things he is sure:

That the Day will come;
There will always be plenty to suffer because of Him before that;
But, we are not to worry because if we stick with Him, not a hair of our heads will be lost and our endurance will win us our lives.

We prepare best for His coming by the way we welcome Him in the circumstances and events of our daily life, and above all how we welcome Him in each other, particularly in the most vulnerable.

"A bridge collapsed and some 80 people were plunged to their deaths in the turbulent waters below.  One of the bodies dredged up during the grappling operations was that of a man still clutching a dollar bill, a symbol of all that he had yet to give, all that he might have done if time had not run out for him.  It should be one of our nagging fears that we may die that way; with our riches yet unspent, with our talents, our skills untried and unused in the service of God and neighbour.  We should not be caught short but give while there is yet time to give.  Thus, when our day comes to stand before God we must appear before him with empty hands, with our opportunities for doing good all exploited, with our resources for make people happy all depleted.  Another way of saying, perhaps, that our Christian pilgrimage must be one grand spending spree."
